Bertrand’s Paradox and the Principle of Indifference*
The principle of indifference is supposed to suffice for the rational assignation of probabilities to possibilities. Bertrand advances a probability problem, now known as his paradox, to which the principle is supposed to apply; yet, just because the problem is ill-posed in a technical sense, applying it leads to a contradiction. Examining an ambiguity in the notion of an ill-posed problem show...
متن کاملThe age-indifference principle and equality.
The question of whether or not either elderly people or those whose life expectancy is short have commensurately reduced claims on their fellows, have, in short, fewer or less powerful rights than others, is of vital importance but is one that has seldom been adequately examined. Despite ringing proclamations of justice and equality for all, the fact is that most societies discriminate between ...

Estimation of Bandlimited Signals in Additive Gaussian Noise: a "Precision Indifference" Principle
The sampling, quantization, and estimation of a bounded dynamic-range bandlimited signal affected by additive independent Gaussian noise is studied in this work. For bandlimited signals, the distortion due to additive independent Gaussian noise can be reduced by oversampling (statistical diversity). The pointwise expected mean-squared error is used as a distortion metric for signal estimate in ...
متن کاملChaotic principle: an experimental test
The chaotic hypothesis discussed in [GC1] is tested experimentally in a simple conduction model. Besides a confirmation of the hypothesis predictions the results suggest the validity of the hypothesis in the much wider context in which, as the forcing strength grows, the attractor ceases to be an Anosov system and becomes an Axiom A attractor. A first test of the new predictions is also attempted.
